Cambodia monitors and understands Thailand's situation: Tea Banh

BANGKOK (The Nation/ANN) - Cambodia's Deputy Premier and Defence Minister Tea Banh on Monday started his first official visit to Thailand since the Thai military seized the power.

Tea Banh, accompanied by Lt Gen Hun Manet, is scheduled to meet junta chief Gen Prayuth Chanocha on Tuesday. Hun Manet is the son of Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Thailand and Cambodia fell out over the interpretation of the World Court’s 1963 ruling on the Preah Vihear temple.

Cambodia took the issue to the International Court of Justice during Abhisit Vejjajiva;s premiership.

Shortly after the Thai junta seized the power in May, Cambodia agreed to release a Thai activist; Veera Somkwamkid, who was jailed for espionage.

Tea Banh’s visit is considered significant and demonstrative of the improvement in bilateral ties.

Tea Banh said Cambodia has monitored the political developments in Thailand and was aware of the political, military and other issues. His country was pleased to be invited to visit Thailand at this time, he said.

Thailand’s problem solving has been clear and led to the restoration of peace and order.

Tea Banh quoted Hun Sen as saying that he understood the Thai situation very well.
